Denver Broncos have handed president of
football operations John Elway a three-year contract extension despite
their heavy defeat in the Super Bowl to Seattle.
The Hall of Fame
quarterback has signed a new deal through to the 2017 season and will
also be given the title of general manager, duties he was basically
handling already anyway."I am grateful for the opportunity that I've been given with the Broncos," Elway said. "Our goal is to continue building on the culture of winning established by Pat Bowlen [the owner] and we remain relentlessly committed to delivering a world championship to our fans."
The Broncos fell short in Super Bowl XLVIII on February 2 in suburban New York, falling 43-8 to the Seattle Seahawks.
Elway guided the Broncos to the 1998 and 1999 Super Bowl titles in his last two NFL seasons as a player and took over his executive post three years ago, building a squad that reached the Super Bowl for the first time since his glory days.
The Broncos set an NFL record for points in a season with 606 while quarterback Peyton Manning set records for passing yardage and touchdowns in a season.
"Our organisation is extremely pleased with the work John Elway has done in his three years since rejoining the Broncos," team president Joe Ellis said. "He has demonstrated great vision and leadership in his role, assembling a championship-calibre team and positioning it for sustained success.
"We are very confident in the direction of the Broncos with John Elway leading our football operations."
