Ovechkin scored an empty-netter with 24.5 seconds left to play, while Troy Brouwer, Marcus Johansson and John Carlson also tallied for the Capitals.
Nicklas Backstrom contributed four assists for Washington, while Jordan Staal and Riley Nash were on target for the Hurricanes.
Kyle Palmieri's overtime winner gave the Anaheim Ducks a seventh straight win, 3-2 over the New Jersey Devils.
Mathieu Perreault and Cam Fowler got the other two Anaheim goals, while Andy Greene and Michael Ryder scored for the Devils.
